I rarely take "lunch" during the week but today I thought I'd spend some time thinking about Blogware and how I've done such a poor job at conveying its strengths to other people. The challenge is not a simple one because as you add more features, you naturally tap into more markets but each market has its own need and does not necessarily care about the features which are great for a different market. In explaining everything to every person, I end up with a near 100% confusion rate. What I need to do is explain the features which matter to the person I am speaking with so they understand how the program can work for them. I always end up thinking that they *should* know about these other features but again, it adds to confusion rather than getting them excited about how the program can help their specific situation.
My goal for the next 30 days is to try and evaluate how this product might work for the person I am interacting with and refrain from providing information overload. Then I'll field questions about, "Can I do this?" or, "Can I do that?" and I'll [hopefully] say, "Heck yeah! Here's what you do...".
As we add more features to Blogware I'll also try to make a remark or two about them and the implications associated with those features so I have a nice history of what/why we have available.

Hi Tom, great blog.
I am a reseller of all things tucows and have had my blog up for over a year now. After reading your post I got to thinking about some of the discussions I have had with the consumers of my online drivel. One in particular stands out. I asked the question "why do you always phone me to talk about my articles and never post any comments? Answer 'becuase I can spell and I am embaressed' was the reply. I really think this statement is a silent echo amongst wanna be bloggers. I know that there are numerous ways to check you spelling before you post but they all involve another application. With the massive feature list of blogware I think it's a non starter to tell this guy to open up somthing else to edit his post before he types it in. i.e. I spoke to a guy last week who did not know how to use the copy function via right clicking with his mouse, can you imagine me telling him to download and install blogjet, yikes. So the question is: When will we see a sssplell chicker in blogware? Now is the time for all good Tom's to come to the aid of the illiterate. Re: Lunchtime Thoughts On Blogware

Spell checking is a great potential feature (among so many!) but unfortunately I don't get to drive the feature set. I'll pass it along to the trigger-pullers as another request for this feature. And hopefully I'll get the pleasure of implementing in the not-too-distant future.
I suppose there will always be features that are supported in MT/TypePad/Blogger that we don't have and the reverse is going to be true. I'm sure the decision process involves level of demand for any given feature and the time required to implement such things, among other pieces. There's no doubt that the next round of features will include some of the most requested items from resellers. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave your thoughts. It is always helpful and appreciated. |
