2nd Half With Abigail and Benjamin
The kids made their way into the garage for the second half of the Colts vs. Patriots game last night. Abby sat on my lap most of the time while Ben hopped up for 15 minutes or so, spending the rest of his time playing on the pool table. It was great! Abby used to do it a lot more often when she was 2 and those were some of the most memorable moments of my life as a parent.
I’m sitting now with my handy-dandy new Green Bay Packers hat and wondering why I locked on to them as “my team”. I didn’t really get into football until after high school and I think I watched a game with a young Favre throwing for GB. I saw him take a massive hit from a defensive player and Brett hopped up, slapped the guy on the helmet as if to indicate, “Good hit mister!”, and got into the huddle. I knew at that moment that I would like watching him so I did whenever I could and I suppose that’s how I came to follow the Packers.
I’ve also come to like the Packers organization as opposed to the Raiders or Cowboys — Al Davis and Jerry Jones rub me the wrong way for some reason. Perhaps this will be the reason I support GB going forward, even after Favre leaves. But I’m not so sure I’m a real franchise fan (in a monogamous way) anymore.
I’m finding that I’m much more a fan of individual players than I am of specific teams. I absolutely love watching Peyton Manning throw the ball. I loved watching Jerome Bettis run. Jerry Rice, of course. I like players more than I like teams. Does that make me a traitor or a fair weather fan? I still like watching Brett though it is more painful these days because he [wisely] avoids the hit in his old age rather than making a toss with an impending slam on its way.
I’ll still hoot and holler for Green Bay, possibly for nostalgia’s sake, but I think I may have lost my lust for a specific team. Still evaluating my feelings on the topic. I’ll likely root for a team because I like one or more of the players more than those on the opposing side. Is that like cheering for a team because you like the color of their jersey? Maybe. Maybe it makes me a crappy football fan too. Dave and Jaime are sure to give me some shit about this post (diehard Green Bay and Chicago fans respectively). Darin will likely put me in a headlock (also a Packer fan to the death).
