Solving The 5 Day Refund Problem For The Registry
I’m no fan of Verisign but I do want to toss out an idea that might help them battle the domain speculators and spammers who register domains for just a few days and then cancel them for a refund. The basic idea is, if you use the domain it cannot be returned, kinda like underwear.
If you make an honest spelling mistake I think it’s a good idea to refund the money within a specified amount of time. But if you’ve used the domain, why should the Registrar or Registry foot the bill? And why should the rest of the community be left with only the crappy names that don’t get any type-in or accidental traffic? Check it:
Users can register domains with no nameservers which means those domains will not be in the roots and will not work for mail or testing type-in traffic. If the domain owner adds nameservers within the 5 day period the domain would no longer be eligible for a refund. Beyond 5 days, it’s not eligible at all. Are there any real holes in this policy that would still allow for domain exploitation or punish those who would make an honest mistake?
