Cruising the Zoo Train
Yes, I know today was the second half of Wildcard Weekend for the NFL but it also happened to be one of the most gorgeous Winter days I can recall. So Kerri, the kids and myself packed up and went to the Santa Barbara Zoo. I’m sure I’ve described this zoo before; It is small as compared to the L.A. Zoo but it has a terrific staff, some great animals and a beautiful setting. Basically, you can see all of it in less than two hours but with the large relaxation areas, why would you want to?
Before leaving I wanted to be sure my camera was both charged and had available space. Thankfully it was in tip-top shape so I was a bit more pained when I arrived in SB to recall the camera still sitting on my desk at home. No pics from the zoo today. This is a bit of a bummer because there were some new exhibits (two snow leopards) and many of the previously existing animals who never seem to show themselves were out and about today. I hope to learn my lesson and never forget my camera again but let’s face it, I’m an idiot and I’ll forget it again, maybe at your wedding!
From time to time the zoorooz (Wow! My very own palindrome meaning: zoo gurus) will allow us humanoids to feed the giraffes. Ben wasn’t too thrilled with it but Abby stuck her arm right out there and let that roll of tape they call a tongue wrap her wrist and extract the tall-boy treat. It was really cool but half the time I was wondering what freshly cooked giraffe tastes like.
I’ve been going back and forth in my head about whether or not to disclose this next item but I guess Ben will need to know later in life why he got beat for three days straight this week. This zoo has a cool little train that cruises around the outside of the park and the conductor tells you lots of clever things along the way. So we bought tickets and while waiting in line I was holding Ben. I should note that we saw two large elephants today… this will be helpful information in just a sec…
Where was I? Oh yeah, I was holding Ben while in line and he was playing with my ear. Then, he holds on to my ear, looks me in the eye, glances back at my ear and looks back at me to say, “Elephant! Elephant!”. I mean, WTF! I’ve always known that I have big ears and they appear even larger with my recently shaved head. But I didn’t imagine that my own son would start tossing out digs before he was two years old. Of course Kerri, the one who dated Dumbo in High School, was right next to us and started laughing uncontrollably. It’ll take a couple of days for things to settle and for me to feel somewhat dignified again.
I did put up a couple of new pics today but not from the zoo. And one of my customers (Celestron) came out with a totally cool looking device for the amateur astronomer: The Sky Scout. Check it out and then buy me one when they become available. Don’t worry if someone else also buys me one, I’ll just give theirs away next New Year’s Eve and keep yours for myself, I promise.
