Watching Baseball, Footbal and Bill Cowher
Tonight we have a great fotball game going (Pittsburgh at San Diego) and a good baseball game (Angels vs. Yankees), in the same time slot. It can be hard to switch between two good football games but for some reason, at least tonight, it has been very easy to switch between the football and baseball action without feeling like I’ve missed much.
One priceless view I caught while on the football game was a bobbled punt return where the San Diego player (didn’t catch his name) had called for a “fair catch” and had the ball bounce right off his chest into the hands of a Pittsburgh player who proceeded to make off with the ball. About 60 seconds later (really!) the refs threw a flag based on some crazy (in my view) interpretation of the rule regarding how much latitude the receiving player gets after he’s made the fair catch signal.
Anyone who watches football and has glanced over at Bill Cowher (coach of the Steelers) during a game knows how serious he seems and how infuriated one might imagine him being if he got too much sugar in his coffee at Denny’s. Just after feeling good about the recovery by his team he was given a shot by the refs and I’m telling you… I swear man, he was madder than a wet hornet. They took away his fumble recovery in one of the most liberal interpretations of a rule I’ve ever seen. I feel bad because I know he’s going to burst a blood vessel one of these days but I’m a junkie for his facial expressions.
Looks like the Angels just beat the Yankees, 5 – 3.
