Kitchen Progress

As many of you know we are having our kitchen remodeled and it has been a tough road. Todd has been very thoughtful in removing items only as needed and putting things back in as soon as reasonably possible. Our lighting is in, cabinets installed and stained (done by my old friend Sean Carroll of Carroll Woodworks) but we still need to replace the floor and have our granite countertops cut and delivered.

Having 25% of our house under construction for several weeks is challenging with the little ones because they want to get into everything (mostly Ben). But the toughest part is not having our appliances, counter space, etc. We’ve eaten fast food more in the last 5 weeks than I did the previous year. At some point I realized the piece I missed most about our working kitchen — The sink. Our BBQ has a side burner so we can cook with relative ease but where on earth do you clean the dishes? How about the bathtub. Here’s the routine: Kids take a bath. Clean the tub so we can do dishes. Clean the tub to get rid of harsh dishwashing detergent. Kids take a bath. Repeat until suicidal thoughts become to frequent. Kneeling down over that tub to scrub pans is no picnic for your back muscles. Kerri’s done most of it so this complaint is more on her behalf.

With our cabinets installed and a plywood top in place, Todd jumped in and temporarily installed our sink. He also installed one of our ovens and microwave which does not need to be on the floor. The sink baby! Garbage Disposal! We’re golden! I can endure this construction for quite a while now.

One of the reasons this is taking so long is, I got wishy-washy on how to handle my ceiling. We had a soffit hanging down appx. 7 inches which I wanted to eliminate to give us a higher ceiling all around. In removing that portion I saw that our valuted wood ceiling (present in most of the rest of the house) was fully intact above the drywall. I began asking about leaving it exposed but it took me 4 days or so to make up my mind with the additional cost and time extension. I decided to go with my original plans but by that time I had pushed back my granite guy. My wait time went from 6 days after the cabinets were in to 3 weeks. My fault and now we’re in a waiting game. It’s not generally a good idea to put down a new floor before the countertops go in, in case something gets dropped, blah.

Hopefully we’ll be done in ~2 weeks. And like I said, I’ve got a sink baby!
