Snake Sighting

I just hung up the phone and was pacing while I pondered my next task for the day and I wandered outside. To my surprise there was a large snake in the grass (literally) about 5 feet away from me. Large is relative for this type of snake which I suspect was a Garter (or “Ribbon”) snake — It seemed to be 4 feet in length which is quite large for that species.

This is the first time I’ve found a snake in my backyard though they exist all over my neighborhood. I’ve seen rattle snakes, gopher snakes and caught a beautiful California King last summer. Snakes don’t bother me and in fact I quite enjoy them. But with rattle snakes in the area, I need to think about my kids playing in the backyard. So I’ll be on the lookout. Hopefully I’ll have my camera ready the next time this particular fellow crosses my yard. And too, I want to be sure my dog doesn’t try to get at our little scalled friends.
