Microsoft Helping Mozilla?
There’s an interesting article about Microsoft’s decision to cease production of a standalone browser. I had not really thought of the positive impact this could have for other browsers on the market.
Right now MSIE is what most sites code for, hoping that decisions made will work to some degree in other environments. But this is in large part due to the notion that IE6 is available for all reasonable versions of the Windows OS (95, 98, ME, XP). But if you can only use advanced features of recent browsers by upgrading your OS, more folks will cease using IE and move towards Mozilla and other standalone browsers which offer the upgrades without the required purchase of a new OS. At least this is what the article indicates, and I tend to agree.
Except for Win95, I have only upgraded my OS with the purchase of a new computer. I am not about to buy a new box just to get a new browser. I guess this is sorta silly for me to say… I only use IE to test our toolbar these days with Moziall being my default browser. But prior to that [fairly recent] switch, I always upgraded MSIE when new versions were available. Interesting. Buy Dell stock? Or dump MSFT?
